"Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his stripes we are healed."
-Isaiah 53:4-5
With all the tolerance it is easy for us to forget that it is our transgressions that caused Christ to be crucified and sacrificed. Often, we think that if someone doesn't want to hear the gospel, it's up to them, but they need to hear it because their sins were also the cause for Christ's death. None can say that they are exempt from the great debt we owe to God and Christ.
On the other hand, God did not need to send his Son to die for us. The "crushing" and "wounding" were meant for the disobedient, not the Christ. Yet, God displays his love for us in "the one he loves" and has made us alive with Christ in his resurrection. It is precisely by Christ's being "wounded for our transgressions" and "crushed for our iniquities" that we can have peace, by his suffering we are healed. Praise God for his awesome grace!
